Best Places to See Fall Colors in 2026 (Peak Dates by Region)
Where to see the best fall foliage in 2026, with peak-color dates from late September through early November — including Vermont, the Smokies, Shenandoah, and Colorado aspens.
📋 Summary
Peak fall color in 2026 runs from September 22 in northern New England and the Colorado Rockies through early November in the Smokies and Deep South. Farmers’ Almanac rates the central Appalachians (Oct 12–28) as the best bet this year. Peak at any one overlook usually lasts about a week; weather can move that window by 1–2 weeks.
If you are planning a long weekend from New York, New Jersey, D.C., Dallas, or the Bay Area, lock lodging for the dates below — then re-check a live foliage map about 10–14 days before you leave. Higher elevations typically peak 10–14 days earlier than nearby valleys.

1. Vermont — Northeast Kingdom, Smugglers’ Notch & Route 100
Best dates: Northeast Kingdom and higher notches September 22 – October 5, 2026. Central Vermont and the Champlain Valley October 5 – October 18.
Vermont is still the classic maple-red trip. Start north (Island Pond, Lake Willoughby, Stowe / Smugglers’ Notch) at the end of September, then follow Route 100 south through Green Mountain National Forest in early to mid-October. Stowe locals often aim for the first two weeks of October.
NRI weekend tip: Fly into Burlington or drive from Boston / NYC. Book midweek if you can — Columbus Day weekend (October 10–12, 2026) will be packed.
2. New Hampshire — Kancamagus Highway & White Mountains
Best dates: Highlands and Great North Woods September 22 – October 5. White Mountains and Kancamagus Highway early to mid-October (plan October 3 – October 16). Lakes Region and Monadnock later in October.
The Kancamagus (Route 112) between Lincoln and Conway is one of the most photographed fall drives in the country. Pair it with Franconia Notch or Crawford Notch. Color starts in the north and drops elevation week by week.
3. Maine — Acadia National Park
Best dates: Northern and western Maine late September – first week of October. Central mountains around the first week of October. Coast and Acadia typically mid- to late October 2026.
Acadia’s mix of ocean, granite, and hardwoods is a different show than inland maple country. If you only have one coastal weekend, target October 11 – October 25 and watch the park’s weekly color reports.
4. Shenandoah National Park & Skyline Drive, Virginia
Best dates: Brightest color usually October 10 – October 20, 2026. The wider central Appalachian corridor (western Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina highlands) is forecast October 12 – October 28 and is the Farmers’ Almanac best bet for 2026.
Skyline Drive is about 70 miles from Washington, D.C. Expect red-brown oaks, yellow birch and poplar, and red maple / black gum. Sourwood (vivid scarlet) is having a strong year in the Appalachians.
NRI weekend tip: Easy overnight from D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, or Richmond. Enter at Front Royal or Thornton Gap; drive a stretch rather than waiting at one overlook.
5. Blue Ridge Parkway (Virginia & North Carolina)
Best dates: Northern Parkway (roughly mileposts 0–300) October 12 – October 28. Southern Parkway toward Asheville and the Smokies (mileposts 300–469) October 18 – November 2. Mid- to late October is the practical planning window; change elevation instead of hunting one “perfect” milepost.
Book Asheville, Boone, or Roanoke lodging weeks ahead. The Parkway is a 469-mile drive — pick a 50–100 mile segment, not the whole road.
6. Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Tennessee / North Carolina)
Best dates: Highest peaks (Kuwohi, formerly Clingmans Dome; Newfound Gap) from early October. Most brilliant color below 4,000 feet mid-October through early November. Regional window October 18 – November 2, 2026.
Elevations range from about 875 to 6,643 feet, so the season lasts several weeks if you move from ridgeline to valley. Cades Cove and Roaring Fork often lag the high country by 1–3 weeks. Clingmans Dome Road can close in weather — have a Newfound Gap backup.
NRI weekend tip: Fly into Knoxville, Asheville, or Atlanta. Gatlinburg / Pigeon Forge sell out for mid-October weekends; stay in Townsend or Cherokee if needed.
7. Colorado — Maroon Bells, San Juan Skyway & Independence Pass
Best dates: High country from mid-September; statewide aspen peak September 22 – October 10, 2026. Maroon Creek Valley is often at its gold in the third week of September. Lower elevations are more mixed this year.
This is a golden-aspen trip, not New England reds. Last Dollar Road near Telluride and the Million Dollar Highway (U.S. 550) are the classic drives. Independence Pass usually closes for winter after peak — don’t cut it too late.
NRI weekend tip: Denver or Aspen flights. Reserve Maroon Bells bus / timed entry as soon as the window opens; weekends in late September are extremely crowded.
8. Utah — Guardsman Pass, Alpine Loop & Logan Canyon
Best dates: October 1 – October 20, 2026 at higher canyons. Color can start in mid-September above the valleys.
Expect quaking aspen, cottonwood, and Gambel oak. Mirror Lake Highway and Mount Nebo Loop are also strong if Guardsman Pass is busy or weather-limited.
9. New York Catskills, Hudson Valley & Adirondacks
Best dates: Adirondacks from late September. Catskills and Hudson Valley October 8 – October 22, 2026. NYC and Long Island can linger into early November.
From New Jersey or New York City, Route 23A (Kaaterskill) and Storm King are realistic day trips. For a full weekend, add the Catskill Center trails or drive farther north into the Adirondacks the first half of October.
10. Michigan — Sleeping Bear / Pierce Stocking & Leelanau
Best dates: Upper Peninsula September 28 – October 12 (fair/mixed in 2026 because of drought stress). Lower Michigan lakeshore — Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, Leelanau Peninsula, M-22, Tunnel of Trees — October 8 – October 22.
If you are flying from Chicago or Detroit, skip a stressed U.P. weekend and aim for the Leelanau / Sleeping Bear stretch in mid-October instead.
How to hit peak (not just “October”)
- Peak lasts about one week in a given town. Build a 3–4 day trip so a rainy day doesn’t wipe the whole plan.
- Go uphill if you’re early, downhill if you’re late. Color moves south and downhill roughly 50–100 miles per week.
- Best light: clear mornings and late afternoon. Midday is harsher for photos; overcast can actually make reds look richer.
- Weekdays beat weekends at Kancamagus, Skyline Drive, Maroon Bells, and Newfound Gap.
- Confirm 10–14 days out on a live map such as Explore Fall or the weekly Farmers’ Almanac foliage map. A warm dry October stretches the season; wind, heavy rain, or a hard freeze shortens it.
Quick “if I can only take one trip” picks for 2026
- From the Northeast corridor: Shenandoah / Skyline Drive, October 12 – October 18 — strongest national outlook this year and an easy drive.
- Classic maples: Vermont Route 100 or New Hampshire’s Kancamagus, October 3 – October 12.
- Longer season, bigger park: Great Smoky Mountains, high country October 10 – October 18 or Cades Cove October 24 – November 1.
- From Texas / Mountain West: Colorado aspens September 22 – October 5, or Utah loops October 4 – October 18.
💡 In other words
For 2026, point the car at the Appalachians in mid-October, New England in the first half of October, and Colorado aspens in late September. Don’t bet the whole vacation on one Saturday at one overlook.
