What is the cap-gap extension?

Cap-gap extension automatically extends your F-1 status and OPT if:

• You have a pending or approved H-1B petition
• H-1B start date is October 1st
• Your OPT expires between April 1 and September 30

Benefits:

• OPT automatically extends until September 30
• You can continue working
• No need to file separate extension

Your DSO will update your I-20 to reflect cap-gap extension.
